Category 2: strong An!
Category 2 was represented by the largest group,
amongst which - pleasant news! - 26 newcomers, i.e. players who had
never played a GIPF-championship before. And they did amazingly well
because there were 3 newcomers in the top 4. More over, one of them,
An Baelemans, stood tall above the others and won with a perfect score
of 6 out of 6. Yahoo! At last! Leaving the juniors out of consideration,
finally a woman made the males bite the dust! Hereby the prejudice
that playing GIPF (or abstract 2-player games in general) is a man's
thing got a blow. That is: a first blow; many must follow! 3 males
shared the second place with 5 wins: Christof Nuytens, Gerard Kuypers
and Ad Rovers.
The most remarkable achievement, however, came from Felix Vermeulen.
Felix is 12 and could have played in category 3, but he preferred
a real challenge and chose to play "against the adults". And so he
did, indeed. With 4 wins he ended in a shared fifth place and taught
many of the "adults" a lesson.

Category 1: top-favorites floored by underdog
The battle of the giants, and immediately in the
first round a big surprise: Koen de Jongh loses the opening game on
board 1 against Dirk Monsieur. In the second and third round many
more surprises; all of the top-favorites get beaten: Patrick Van de
Perre, Kurt Vandenbranden, Raf Ruyters and Werner Dupont. Koen de
Jongh and Romeo Ruyters, the winners of the two previous editions,
already got on their knees twice. 3 players remain unbeaten, none
of whom were expected at the beginning: Aksel De Meester (strong,
but hardly gipfed this year), Karel Daelemans (playing very well the
last months, but often too nervous when it really matters) and Dirk
Monsieur (pulverised last year in category 1, which made him say:"Never
thought that the level of play was going to increase that much in
so little time!").
Dirk Monsieur lays down Karel Daelemens in the fourth round. And because
of Kurt Vandenbranden's win against Axel De Meester, Dirk becomes
the sole leader of the lot. Amazing, most certainly, and even more
amazing is that he succeeds in holding on: in the fifth and sixth
round he beats, respectively, Walter Jacobs and Kurt Vandenbranden.
Only in the seventh round he has to acknowledge Patick Van de Perre's
superiority, but by then he already knew that he had won the 4 Open
GIPF tournament. And he did so in a very convincing way.
Karel Daelemans and Kurt Vandenbranden, all day just one step behind
Dirk, end with 5 out of 7. They share the second place with Patrick
Van de Perre and Romeo Ruyters, who both played a strong second half
of the championship.
