The "Lion" from The Netherlands
The very first TAMSK tournament. The moment
the tournament took place the game existed for already 2 1/2 years,
but it was always considered too difficult to play in the context
of a competition. Normally one would need an arbiter for every board.
But even then - in particular because not all of the hours-glasses
contain an equal amount of time - TAMSK always sounded like asking
for trouble. Well, that appeared to be wrong. The tournament went
smooth and TAMSK prooved to be a lot of fun as a tournament game.
So, no problem at all - it must be said: thanks to the full cooperation
of the participants. Gijs "Lion" de Leeuw van Weenen wrote
Project GIPF history: he surprised everybody, not in the least himself,
and won the first and maybe the last (certainly not!) TAMSK tournament
with 5 out of 5.During the previous Project GIF weekend, Jeroen
Weyn could have been pointed out as the most unfortunate player.
He preformed well, no doubt about that, but in all four tournaments
he ended just one point behind the respective winners. And, on top
of that, in the overall standings he ended just one point behind
Kurt Van den Branden, the first Project GIPF Champion. This only
to say that Jeroen is a very talented and consistent player, who
came to this 2nd Project GIPF weekend with a clear plan in mind:
he wanted to do better than the second place in at least one of
the tournaments. And so he did! He started by winning the opening
event the first day (i.e. the DVONN-tournament), and succeeded in
keeping the rhythm going and also won the TAMSK tournament concinsingly
with 5 straight wins. A fine bonus was that this second title had
also put him in the lead for the overall title. After two events
he got 1 point behind Kurt Van den Branden, just like last year
his main rival, but Kurt lost 2 of his 5 TAMSK matches. As a result
of that Jeroen jumped over Kurt and was now leading the overall
standings.

Ranking Tournament
Third event of the 2nd Project GIPF Weekend

Jeroen Weyn grabs second
title
When the first Project GIPF weekend was over,
Jeroen Weyn could have been pointed out as the most unfortunate
player. He preformed well - no question about that! - but in all
four tournaments he had ended just one point behind the respective
winners. And, on top of that, in the overall standings he also ended
just one point behind Kurt Van den Branden, the first Project GIPF
Champion. This only to say that Jeroen is a very talented and consistent
player, who came to this 2nd Project GIPF weekend with a clear plan
in mind: he wanted to get rid of that second place; he wanted to
do better than that in at least one of the tournaments. And so he
did! He started by winning the opening event the first day (i.e.
the DVONN-tournament). Quite happy with such a successful start,
he kept his rhythm going and also won the TAMSK tournament one day
later. 5 straight wins on his score sheet! A fine bonus was that
this second title also put him in the lead in the overall standings.
At the end of the first day, thus after the DVONN and the ZÈRTZ
tournament, he was 1 point behind Kurt Van den Branden - apparently
just like last year his main rival -, but Kurt lost 2 of his 5 TAMSK
matches, as a result of which Jeroen jumped over Kurt. Now it was
his turn to lead by one point.
There was also the surprisingly strong young
player Johannes Cannoodt, who ended in second place with 4 games
won. Johannes had not found a defence against Jeroen's agressive
play, but he scored convincing wins against Kurt Van den branden,
Jix Demerco, Michael Reitz and Hennes Passman, being the 4 players
that ended in the third place with 3 wins each! Last year's winner,
Gijs de Leeuw van Wenen, did not show his teeth the way he did the
first time and won only 2 games. Patrick Van de Perre is already
looking forward to the next TAMSK tournament. He will seek revenge!
