Project GIPF weekend
As announced yet: this year GIPF celebrates its 5th anniversary. And
if GIPF exists 5 years, then the Project exists 5 years, too! 2000
has been difficult and the beginning of 2001 looked bad - really
bad. We came close to putting down the books, but, yet again a number
of months later, Don & Co still exists. And meanwhile DVONN exists!
And even GIPF Set 2 exists! That calls for a party! A game party!
Ooh yes, a Project GIPF game party!
One of the main reasons - if not THE main reason - why we succeeded
in keeping Project GIPF alive is the support we have had from a number
of people. In the beginning it was just a handful, but meanwhile it
has become a group, a community that covers all the continents. It
remains a small community, but it is growing. I wish the world would
be a *real* global village, so that it would be easy to invite everybody
to attend the Project GIPF weekend. For the time being the global
village remains virtual. Maybe next year. Awaiting the solution for
that practical problem, I hope that many of the players who like abstract
games for 2 players and who sympathize with Project GIPF - and don't
live too far from Antwerp - will find a way (time, energy, means,
etc.) to come over.
As you must know by now: the Project GIPF weekend takes place on November
24 and 25. For the occasion Don & Co hired a Youth Hostel about
25 km from Antwerp. We want to make the party as cheap as possible
for everybody, so we offer free accomodation and there will be no
entry fees for the tournaments. If you cannot come for the complete
weekend, then just pop in whenever you want. We have planned a number
of tournaments, but you can just pop in to say hello or to play the
games of the Project without playing in a competition. Only one request:
if you think that, at a certain moment, you'll need *food*, then you
must order it in advance! If not, you'll have to play with an empty
stomach.

"Le Maître" wins Open Dutch Championship
GIPF
Patrick "Maître"
Van de Perre (B) worked himself slowly upwards. With careful and
consistent play he settled himself in the top 10 of the rankings (currently
in 7th place), but without *brio* because he remained the highest
ranked player who hadn't won a ranking tournament yet. He was collecting
second and third places and always came just a bit short for a victory.
In Eindhoven he put things straight: 5 wins in a row during the first
Open Dutch Championship. Maybe he was a little too stressed during
the previous confrontations, but this time (the first time that the
games were played with 30 minutes per player) he found a way to deal
with his nerves. He won his last match against Ad Rovers (NL)
in a true final. Ad was the second player who was unbeaten after 4
rounds, which illustrates well that the *Dutchers*, in particular
the EGO-members, are catching up with the Belgians. In the final standings
Ad shared the second place with Werner Dupont (B) and Kurt
Vandenbranden (B).
Also a special compliment for Felix Vermeulen's (B) great result.
He was the only junior (11 years) amongst the seniors, but that couldn't
stop him from winning 3 games.
Note: now that
Patrick Van de Perre has won his first trophy, Jix Demerco is the
highest ranked player without a win... Jix, do you copy?

2001 is Kurt Van den Branden's year
Kurt Van den Branden
was the strongest and most regular player of 2001. He snatched the
title just 1 point in front of Werner Dupont and Patrick
Van de Perre. A representative top 3, because each of them won
a heat of the GRC with 5 wins out of 5 games. More over, they were
the 3 highest ranked players that participated and that is a fine
constatation, because it means that the Elo-ratings are becoming more
and more reliable.
11 players played 3 or 4 heats (marked with an "x" in the
table below). In total 35 players signed up for one of the GRC tournaments.
